Mental Health Non-government Workforce Study

The Collaboration - a tri-partite partnership between the Australian Health Workforce Institute, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the NHWT - has been created to undertake a significant body of national health workforce research over a three-year period. One of these projects  is aimed at  better understanding of the existing non-government mental health workforce, and what the future needs of the workforce may be.  The aim of the project is to design and test a methodology to support mental health workforce planning for the non-government community mental health sector, through the provision of improved data and information on workforce supply and trends. The study aims to create a workforce planning tool for future planning, and to achieve a minimum dataset for the workforce. The first phase of this program will involve distributing a survey for the completion by managers of non-government organisations providing mental health services to the community. It is expected that the survey will be distributed on the 16th of December and will be found at www.nhwt.gov.au from this date onwards. If you have any questions regarding the project or this request for assistance, please do not hesitate to contact:

POLICY FORUM: Tasmania's Opportunity to Destigmatise Mental Illness

The MHCT was proud to host its inaugural policy forum on Friday 13 March 2009 at the Baha’I Centre.   Please download our agenda and biographies.

Jeff Cheverton (Churchill Fellow; Executive Director Queensland Alliance; MHCA Board Member) led the day’s discussion with his moving presentation.

The panel, comprising Jane Austin (DHHS/MHS), Andrea Heath (SIU), Jo Cook (TASCAG) and Gary Kelly (ARAFMI), discussed the following questions:

  • What does destigmatisation mean to you and/or the organisation you represent?
  • What approaches do you see as necessary for destigmatising mental health?
  • What are you aware of that is currently being done in Tasmania?
  • To destigmatise mental illness, there needs to be a combined government, and consumer, carer and community sector effort.  What sort of statewide social marketing campaign would you like to see?

Jane referred to the following links during her discussion:

http://www.margins2mainstream.com/full-program.php

http://www.foresight.gov.uk/OurWork/ActiveProjects/Mental%20Capital/ProjectOutputs.asp

The panel discussion set up the afternoon workshops well.  Theworkshopsasked participants to discuss the current situation, how to bring about change and how to maximise impact and provide recommendations.  We have developed a summaryof these recommendations which will be used in current policy and policy development in the future.
