Policy and Advocacy Lead

  • Full Time (1.0 FTE), Hobart-based
  • SCHADS Award Level 6.1 plus salary packaging
  • Fixed Term to 30 June 2027 with possible extension

Are you a strategic thinker who thrives on using policy to create real change? Are you looking to drive mental health reform in Tasmania and influence the big conversations? MHCT is seeking a senior policy and advocacy professional who can lead with integrity, work collaboratively, and push for better outcomes for our community-managed mental health sector.

The Policy & Advocacy Lead is a key senior role within MHCT, responsible for shaping and driving our policy development and advocacy agenda. You’ll work closely with the CEO, MHCT staff, and stakeholders across government, community-managed mental health sector, and the community to undertake research, influence reform, and ensure the sector’s voice is heard where it matters.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Provide high-level policy advice to the CEO and MHCT team on emerging issues and strategic opportunities
  • Lead the development of evidence-based policy submissions, position papers, and lead advocacy activities
  • Build and strengthen relationships with government, peak bodies, service providers, and lived experience advocates
  • Represent MHCT in high-level meetings, working groups, and sector forums
  • Work closely with the media and communications team to align messaging and amplify our advocacy impact
  • Design and deliver consultation processes that genuinely engage the sector and community

About you:

You’re a skilled communicator and trusted policy advisor who knows how to translate complex ideas into real-world impact. You’re confident navigating sector dynamics and experienced in leading collaborative policy work in a fast-paced environment. You value respectful relationships, lived experience perspectives, and progressive system reform.

You bring:

  • Tangible experience in policy research, analysis, and development
  • Proven ability to influence and support advocacy efforts
  • Strong understanding of the Tasmanian mental health policy context
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • A collaborative mindset and a practical, problem-solving approach
